My Bariatric Journey – Kimmy Shannon

My Bariatric Journey – Kimmy Shannon

If you are struggling with your weight, you are not alone. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), approximately 80% of adults in the U.S. are either overweight, obese or severely obese.

At age 21, weighing 305 pounds, and feeling uncomfortable in her skin, Kimmy felt hopeless when her efforts to lose weight through diet and exercise went nowhere. Obesity runs in Kimmy’s family, but she has a cousin who decided to do something about her challenges. She had bariatric surgery, lost weight and has maintained it to this day.

Inspired by her cousin, Kimmy decided it was time to take control of her life, and she began exploring whether that same surgery could help her. She met with Dr. Jonathan Taylor, one of the talented general surgeons practicing at Woman’s. Together, they developed a plan but before the surgery could take place, Kimmy would need to get down to 280 pounds. Determined to meet that goal, Kimmy doubled down on her efforts – tracking everything she ate and working out.

On May 23, 2022, Kimmy underwent bariatric surgery. In the three years since then she has continued to lead a healthier lifestyle and has lost a total of 133 pounds. She is keeping the pounds off and loving life. Kimmy says the surgery has not only helped her physical health, but it has also helped significantly improve her mental health. She is finally comfortable in her skin, and her social life is flourishing.
