As I dietitian, I always get asked if I “believe” in dietary supplements. The short answer is yes. Now here’s the long answer. There are many stages of our lives where supplements are recommended like during pregnancy. Most doctors recommend supplementation of vitamin D for infants and vitamin B12 for older adults. But what about the time in between those stages?
According to the most recent 2015 Dietary Guidelines for Americans, individuals should meet their nutritional needs primarily through food intake. A balanced diet that includes a variety of foods from all food groups should provide you with all of the essential vitamins and minerals needed for optimal health. However, throughout my years of practice, I have realized that most people do not follow a balanced diet due to many reasons including preferences, allergies, sensitivities, etc. Sometimes you experience symptoms that don’t seem to have a medical explanation. That’s when supplementation may help. Check out our series of seminars where I discuss a topic and how diet and supplementation can work together to help you feel your absolute best!
