Stefannie Jarreau knows how challenging it can be to shed those unwanted pounds for good. She has struggled with her weight since her childhood, attending her first Weight Watchers’ meeting at just nine years old. A self-described emotional eater, by the time Stefannie became an adult and reached 350 pounds, she was taking four different medications to manage her diabetes and blood pressure and could only walk for short periods of time before stopping to catch her breath.
Things really changed for Stefannie when she realized her daughter was also dealing with weight and body image issues. “Her father and I were big, and I needed her to be healthy for herself. I needed to show her a better way,” said Stefannie.
She tried diet pills, exercise, a weight loss program, and medication for her diabetes for a few years, but nothing worked. Once she discovered her health insurance would cover bariatric surgery she reached out to a nutritionist and started the process.
Prior to surgery, Stefannie lost 10 pounds following the required liquid diet leading up to her procedure. In August 2023, she underwent surgery and more than a year later she is maintaining her weight loss and diet. “I used to eat when I was sad or depressed or anxious or happy, so it was more of an emotional change. Like, a breakup. I’ve had to completely change what I’ve ever done in my life.”
Thanks to the surgery, Stefannie has lost over 100 pounds and is off all her diabetes and blood pressure medications. She can do things she has never done before including getting on a swing and walking uphill nonstop.
Stefannie’s social life has also flourished. She is more confident, goes out instead of staying home, has an abundance of energy, and is living her best life. She hopes her story can be an inspiration to others who might be considering taking the same weight loss journey. “I’ve never received better care in my life than here. It was amazing.”
