Is Berberine the new Ozempic?

Is Berberine the new Ozempic?

Patients have turned to injectables like Ozempic in the past few years to help them lose weight. Due to shortages, many patients are now unable to get this medication unless they have a diabetes diagnosis. Thus, patients are looking for other options to help. One of those options gaining popularity is a supplement called berberine.

  • What is it?

Berberine is a naturally occurring compound found in plants that have been used in traditional Chinese medicine for many years. Some studies have shown that it can improve blood sugar levels and blood pressure as well as decrease triglycerides and LDL cholesterol. Studies have also shown that it may help reduce body weight and body fat, although results were typically very modest. It also exhibits antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties.

  • How does it work?

Berberine activates the AMPK pathway which increases the cells’ uptake of glucose and improves insulin sensitivity; therefore, your cells get the glucose they need so you may not feel as hungry.

  • Should I take it?

If you are looking for a more natural approach to treating medical conditions, berberine may help. As with any supplement, always talk to your doctor. It can affect the efficacy of certain medications and may have some side effects like upset stomach, constipation, and diarrhea. Women who may become pregnant, are pregnant or breastfeeding should not take berberine. People taking insulin or other blood sugar-lowering medications should also use caution.

Once you and your doctor evaluate whether it is a good option, we recommend taking 500 mg before your meals. To start, take one 500 mg capsule before your biggest meal of the day. Gradually increase to 3 capsules a day if tolerated.

  • What else is out there?

There are several supplements with other ingredients which may have similar benefits. For example, the probiotic strain Bifidobacterium lactis B-420™ has been shown to help control body fat and body weight by reducing calorie intake.
