Ten Tips for Trick-or-Treating

Ten Tips for Trick-or-Treating

Halloween is an exciting time of year for kids, and to help ensure they have a safe holiday, here are ten tips to ensure they have fun while staying safe.

  1. Plan a route in advance. Map out a route before leaving the house to avoid long and unfamiliar paths. Stick to neighborhoods and areas you are familiar with.
  2. Stay well-lit. Be sure to carry a flashlight and stick to areas with well-lit streets. Also remember that while some enjoy Halloween, others do not. Avoid houses that have turned off exterior lights signaling they do not to participate.
  3. Walk, don’t run. While it is an exciting night, make sure your child walks and doesn’t run. Be sure to remind them to always look both ways before crossing and never run across a street.
  4. Stay in a group. Make plans with other families and friends to stick together throughout the evening. Remember, there is safety in numbers.
  5. Wear the proper attire. When selecting a costume for you or your child, be sure to pick one that fits properly. Avoid long, over-sized costumes that could become a hazard. Be cautious of masks that may impair vision and breathing.
  6. Comfy shoes. Regardless of your costume choice, make sure to always include a comfortable pair of shoes. This will help keep everyone happy while walking around.
  7. Check the candy. Before your child begins to indulge on the candy they’ve collected, take time to check it out. Candy that has been opened or appears to have been tampered with should be thrown out. Homemade goods or fruits should also be closely inspected.
  8. Hydrate. Make sure you and your child stays hydrated during the evening. Drinking lots of water will keep you both cool and help avoid minor aches and pains the next morning.
  9. Start with a healthy meal. Before trick-or-treating, feed your child a healthy meal. This will provide them with more energy and stamina for walking around and also help reduce those candy cravings.
  10. Use good judgment. Be careful as you walk around. Be alert and aware of your surroundings. Report any suspicious or criminal activity to the local police.
